τε τῷ κράτει καὶ ἐν τῷ ἐξωτερικῷ ἢ ἐν ἰδιωτικοῖς σχολείοις ἢ ἐν παρθεναγωγείοις τῶν Ἀθηνῶν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων μεγάλων πόλεων καὶ κωμῶν τῆς Ἑλλάδος καὶ τῶν ἔξω κοινοτήτων. Ἀλλὰ πόσαι εἶνε αἱ τοιαῦται θέσεις; Πόσαι δ’ ἐπὶ τέλους εἶνε καὶ ὅλαι αἱ ἐν δημοτικοῖς σχολείοις τοῦ κράτους θέσεις διὰ διδασκαλίσσας, ἀφ’ οὗ σήμερον, καίπερ πολλῶν τοιούτων σχολείων συσταθέντων κατὰ τὰ τελευταῖα ἔτη, ὑπάρχουσιν ἐν ὅλῳ ἀνὰ τὸ κράτος μόνον περὶ τὰ 250 σχολεῖα θηλέων; Ἔμαθν ποτε τούτους τοὺς ἀριθμοὺς οἱ γονεῖς οἱ προορίζοντες τὰς θυγατέρας αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ ἐπάγγελμα τῆς διδασκαλίσσης;

Εἶμαι βέβαιος, ὅτι πολλοὶ, ἀναλογιζόμενοι τοὺς κινδύνους καὶ τὴν στενοχωρίαν ἣν θὰ ὑποστῇ ἡ θυγάτηρ αὐτῶν ὡς διδασκάλισσα, θἀποτραπῶσιν ἀπὸ τῆς ἰδέας νὰ παράσχωσιν εἰς αὐτὴν τοιοῦτον βίου πορισμὸν, ἂν μάθωσιν, ὅτι αἱ διδασκάλισσαι ἤδη ἀπὸ ἐτῶν ἤρχισαν νὰ ὑπερπλεονάζωσι παρ’ ἡμῖν. Καθ’ ὅσον δὲ τὸ κακὸν τοῦτο αὐξάνει, εἶνε προφανὲς, ὅτι θὰ συναυξήσωσι καὶ οἱ κίνδυνοι καὶ τὸ ἐκ τῆς διδασκαλίας κέρδος θἀποβαίνῃ ὁσημέραι γλισχρότερον· καὶ εἰς αὐτὴν δὲ τὴν παιδείαν εἶνε φόβος μὴ ἐπέλθῃ ζημία μᾶλλον ἀντὶ ὠφελείας. Ὅτι δὲ ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν κατ’ ἔτος ἀξιουμένων τοῦ πτυχίου νεανίδων εἶνε οὐ μόνον πρὸς τὰς ἀνάγκας τῆς ἐν τῷ ἔθνει γυναικείας παιδεύσεως δυςανάλογος, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὁσημέραι ἀνώτερος, τρανότατα ἀποδεικνύει ὁ ἑξῆς ἀπογραφικὸς πίναξ τῶν κατὰ τὴν τελευταίαν ἑπταετίαν ἐκ τῶν ἐν Ἀθήναις καὶ ἐν Κερκύρᾳ διδασκαλείων τῆς Φιλεκπαιδευτικῆς Ἑταιρίας ἐξελθουσῶν διδασκαλισσῶν.

798 νέαι διδασκάλισσαι ἐντὸς ὀκτὼ ἐτῶν ἤτοι ὑπὲρ τὰς 100 κατ’ ἔτος, ἂν ληφθῇ ὑπ’ ὄψιν, ὅτι ἀπὸ τοῦ 1885 μόνον ἐξῆλθον διδασκάλισσαι ἐκ τοῦ ἐν Κερκύρᾳ διδασκαλείου. Διὰ νὰ ἐννοηθῇ τὸ μέγεθος τῆς δυςαναλογίας, ἀρκεῖ νἀναφέρω, ὅτι ἅπασαι αἱ ἐν τῷ κράτει εἰς δημοτικὰ σχολεῖα τοῦ κράτους φοιτῶσαι μαθήτριαι ἦσαν ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ 1886 περὶ τὰς 21.900 εἰς ἃς δυνάμεθα νὰ
